What Are Dental Cavities?

Dental cavities are also known as dental caries and tooth decay.  In short, cavities refer to the disintegration and breakdown of the tooth surface after coming into contact with acids. The acids are usually a result of bacteria breaking down remains of food particles after meals. Studies showed that the bacteria are typically attracted by sugar-rich and starchy foods and thrive in poor oral hygienic conditions.

Dental cavities often appear as yellow or brown discoloration of the tooth and usually with a hole into the tooth structure. Cavities may include tooth pain. In addition, they can result in tooth loss.dental patient | best dentist quincy

Preventing Dental Cavities

Reduce or Eliminate Sugary Foods and Drinks

As stated earlier, sugar-rich foods like sweets, sodas, and chocolate are a significant contributor to cavities in children. Basing on the fact that kids love candies, the incidences of cavities in children are incredibly high. The sugar-rich meals attract bacteria, which produces acids in the breakdown of these foods. Next, the formed acids corrode the tooth surface and into the core of the structure, forming tooth decay.

The process of tooth destruction is repeated from tooth to tooth as the child continues to indulge in sweets. Finally, the result of consuming large quantities of the sugar-rich foodstuff is massive tooth decay. Therefore, it is highly recommended that children not eat sugary or starchy foods.

It is wise that you teach your child not only how to brush their teeth at an early age, but also the importance of teeth cleaning. Kids, just like adults, should brush their teeth at least twice a day, after meals, and rinse with plenty of water. Teeth brushing removes retained foods from the oral cavity, which would otherwise attract bacteria.

Likewise, your best dentist recommends flossing. Flossing helps remove retained food particles from in between the teeth. It is recommended that kids learn how to floss at an early age and should practice doing so at least once a day.

Maintain Routine Dental Exams and Cleanings

Routine dental exams and cleanings detect issues early on and prevent new ones from forming. We recommend that your child’s first visit be as soon as the first tooth emerges or by their first birthday. Also, children should be visiting the dentist twice a year unless otherwise recommended. During the dental visits, the best dentist will also offer advice on how to best care for your child’s teeth and information on recommended treatments.
